Averof Neofytou

Chairman, House Committee on Financial and Budgetary Affairs

Averof Neophytou studied Economics and Accountancy at New York Institute of Technology (NYIT), in Long Island, New York. He was District Secretary and afterwards Vice-President of the Democratic Rally Youth NEDISY. He was elected Mayor of Polis Chrysochou in 1991, a position he held until 26th May 1996 when he was elected DISY MP and re-elected on May 2006 and May 2011. On August 25th 1999 he was appointed Minister of Communications and Works, a position he served until February 28th 2003. From May 25th 2003 he served as Deputy President of the Democratic Rally. He is currently the Chairman of the Parliamentary committee on Foreign and European Affairs.

He is also the leader of the Cypriot delegation to the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), a member of the Euro-Mediterranean Parliamentary Assembly (EMPA), a member of the Conference of Parliamentary Committees for Union Affairs of Parliaments of the European Union (COSAC), and a member of the Inter-Parliamentary Conference for the Common Foreign and Security Policy and the Common Security and Defense Policy of the European Union. He has served as a member of the Executive Secretariat of the Cyprus Union of Municipalities, Honorary Secretary of the Paphos Chamber of Commerce and Industry, President of the Board of "Evagoras" Football Club of Paphos that participated in the Cyprus 1st Division, member of the Board and Executive of the Cyprus Football Federation and President of the Anti-Cancer Society of the Chrysochou Area.

On 11 May 2013 he was elected as the new President of the party, following the election of Mr. Nicos Anastasiades to the Presidency of the Republic.
